Classification of wolfberry

There are more than 80 kinds of wolfberry in the world. Mainly distributed in South and North America. There are 7 kinds of Lycium barbarum in China, and the following 4 kinds are used for medicine

Qinghai wolfberry

Landform: it often grows on the hillside, wasteland, hilly land, saline alkali land, roadside and village side houses. Plants: multi branched shrubs. Height: 2m.
Branches: thin, curved or drooping, with thorns
Leaves: paper, single leaf alternate or 2-4 clusters, ovate, ovate rhombus, long elliptic to ovate lanceolate. Flowers: solitary or 2 on long branches and in axils of leaves, clustered with leaves on short branches; pedicels: 1-2 cm long, becoming thicker towards the top. Calyx: middle or irregular 3-4-toothed.
Corolla: funnel-shaped, light purple, coarser from bottom to top, cornice lobe stamen: shorter than corolla. Style near the base of filament: the tip protrudes from the stamen, and the top bows the stigma green
Berry: red, ovate. Or oval, rectangular circle. Tip sharp or blunt. 7-15 mm in length and 5-8 mm in diameter. Grower slightly longer
Seeds: flat kidney shaped, about 25-3 mm long, yellow

Ningxia wolfberry
Origin: Gansu, Ningxia, Qinghai, Hebei, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Shanxi and other provinces in the north of China. Landform: it is often found in the hillside, riverbank, canal side and saline alkali land with an altitude of 2000-3000m. Plants: shrubs.
Height: 80-200cm.
Stem: the cultivator’s stem is 10-20cm thick branch: fine. There are thorns.
Leaves: alternate or clustered, lanceolate or oblong lanceolate, slightly fleshy, with inconspicuous veins. Flowers: there are 26 flowers on one or two short branches.

Xinjiang wolfberry
Origin: Xinjiang, Gansu and Qinghai.
Landform: it is often found in dry hillside, dry riverbed, desert riparian forest or saline alkali land. Plant: multi branched shrub height: 1.5m.
Branch: hard, curved tip, old branch with thorns.
Leaves: oblanceolate, elliptic, or broadly lanceolate.
Flowers: 2-3 flowers and leaves cluster on short branches or on axils of long branches. Pedicel: 1-1.8 cm long, becoming thicker toward the top. Huameng: about 4 mm long, often 2-3 split. Corolla: funnel-shaped, lobes ovate.
Stamen: slightly higher than corolla, the filament near the base is at the same level as the inner wall of corolla tube. Style: extend the corolla.
Berry: ovoid or oblong, ca. 7 mm, reddish. Seeds: about 20, kidney shaped, about 15-2 mm long. Flowering and fruiting period: June to September.

Black wolfberry
Origin: landform of Western Inner Mongolia, Northern Shaanxi, Ningxia, Gansu, Qinghai, Xinjiang and Tibet: it is often found in saline alkali land, salinized sand land, riverbank, dry riverbed and roadside. Plant: prickly shrub height: 20-50 cm.
Branches: many branched, branches inclined or lying on the ground, hard, zigzag, with thorns.
Leaves: there are 2-6 clusters on the short branches, which are solitary on the long branches. They are strip-shaped, strip-shaped lanceolate or strip shaped oblanceolate, sometimes narrow lanceolate. Midvein is not obvious
Flowers: 1-2 on short branches. Pedicel: 0.51.0 cm long, thin.
Calyx: narrow campanulate, 4-5cm long, fruit tip expanded into hemispherical shape, wrapped in the lower part of the fruit, 2-4-lobed. Corolla: funnel-shaped, light purple, about 1.2cm long, tube slightly enlarged from bottom to top, 5-lobed, lobes in oval shape
Stamens: higher than corolla, inserted in the middle of corolla. There are sparse hairs near the base of the filament, and there are also sparse hairs at the same height of the corolla tube
Style: nearly as long as stamen, extending corolla.
Berry: purple black, globose, sometimes apex depressed, 49 mm in diam. Seeds: Brown, kidney shaped, 1.5mm long, 2mm wide; flowering and fruiting: May to October.

Yunnan wolfberry

distributed in Luquan County and Jingdong County of Yunnan Province. It is often grown in the sand tide wet place or jungle beside the river at an altitude of 1360-1450 meters. It is also a unique species in China
